RWN SOFT Workshops Funding

There is no such thing as a free lunch... but there is an opportunity for the RWN to apply for some funding to supplement the cost of running SOFT workshops (but no guarantees we will get it!)

If you are interested in having a SOFT workshop in your area you will have to do a little bit of work at your end to show there is interest.

This is what you need to do:

Talk to the RWN and set a date. Needs to be 2 consecutive days and having a date is a requirement of the funding.
Get 14-20 women interested in attending and a commitment to pay a $50 rego fee (there is extra funding for some isolated locations and groups such as Aboriginal women so the cost may be less than $50)
Make a booking of a venue (RWN can help with what type of space is needed)
Write a letter stating that you want the SOFT course to be held in your area, a list of who will be attending and why it is needed.

Today I wave goodbye to my beautiful, gentle daughter as she begins school

Trying not to think too much about it

The little girl who would never leave my side is beside herself with excitement

Me, well it's sobering.

I never though the day would come so soon.

I thought sending my 3rd baby to school would take a lifetime.

So where exactly does that leave me...

Driving to my favourite shop with my 3 yr old, smothering him in kisses, burying my face in his beautiful red curls breathing in the last of his baby scent.

Trying desperately to make myself feel better with some purchases.

His old man humour has the ability to lift you from your darkest moments.

This I am counting on.

The visa bill - well sometimes it just has to hurt so good.

And for all those sending children out into the world on whatever adventure they are about to embark on....

Could our Governor-General be any more gracious and fabulous?

Below is an extract from her speech - it's worth a read.

In October last year, I was delighted, as Patron, to launch the Australian Year of the Farmer 2012.

A year to celebrate the vital role farmers play in our lives.

To remind us that the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the wine we drink, our shoes, our office stationery, the timber in our houses and in our kitchen tables are all connected to farming. So many essentials of daily life are there for us, because of the efforts of our farmers.

Year of the Farmer will inform Australians about the advantages of working in agriculture -- about those quiet achievements of farmers that benefit all of us, and so many people overseas.

Farmers are the sentinels of our environment. They are the first to see changes in soils, water quality, bird life, and natural vegetation. They are also the first 'fixers'. Often, enviromental degradation is stopped in its tracks by farmers.

Collaboration between farmers and scientists has led to significant improvements for producers in other countries. It has helped them to grow food crops resistant to pests, drought and degraded water.

Our farmers are the life force of our nation. They export 60 per cent of everything they produce - key to our national economy. And they sustain valuable local economies and communities. I often observe that women farmers are the glue that holds these together.

We need more farmers.

Year of the Farmer 2012 will reach out to people in our cities to encourage them to move to the bush. There's a strong message for our young people - especially those contemplating life after high school at this time of the year. Think about a career in agriculture.

As a country woman at heart, I know there are many tangible advantages to rural life. Country people have much to teach us about caring for each other, about giving (even when there's not much to give), and about values and respect for other people and for our institutions.

These are qualities that we can lose sight of, as our daily lives become ever more packed with activity, and the distinction between work and home is blurred by technology.

Our sense of community can be blurred, too - it's sad that many people today do not know their neighbours. And yet, when disaster strikes, as it did last year in Queensland's floods and in the Victorian bushfires of 2009, we saw Australians put their lives on hold for others, and behave magnificently in the face of adversity.

I see that spirit of volunteerism, selflessness and respect again and again in country Australia.

People need each other to get things done - the building of a school hall, a retirement home, re-turfing the cricket pitch, setting up the local show. That's what community engagement is all about - it's a very precious thing.

This Australia Day, let's take time to reflect on our lucky country, and to give thanks to the farmers who work so hard to make that luck.

Recovering the practice and art of neighbourliness

Street by Street is a national neighbourhood support program that links people who live in the same street or nearby. The focus is on practical helping tasks such as taking the bin in and out, hanging washing, getting a few items from the shops, or getting mail from the letter box.

Street by street We would like to hear from individuals and organisations around the country interested in participating in rolling out Street by Street on a national scale.

Community centres, service clubs, neighbourhood houses, community health centres, scout and guide groups, and voluntary associations are some of the organisations participating in auspicing a local Street by Street initiative.

Neighbours not volunteers

Participants in a Street by Street link-up are not volunteers, they are people in a voluntary relationship with their neighbours, as neighbours.

The aim of Street by Street is to recover the practice, and art, of neighbourliness. We don’t want to surround this activity with rules and regulations, nor do we want to subject participants to the usual procedures that volunteers in formal organizations are subject to.

Street by Street is a very simple program that aims to re-kindle links between neighbours that might once have formed spontaneously but which, in our day and age, require a little facilitation. It is our intention to run Street by Street as a simple informal network, operating on a very large scale across Australia.

The Fairfax Elders Photo Competition opened on New Year's Day and we've already had a swag of great entries. Get snapping for your chance to win some great prizes! The workshop is suited to those women who are looking at long-term career options, thinking about or are already on a board or are seeking practical and strategic advice. Aboriginal men sought to be part of ABC TV Series 'Closing my Gap'

Aboriginal men are more likely to die in their early 60's - up to 20 years below the national average. While there are numerous initiatives to try and address this, what is the reality of the situation? The series "Closing My Gap' will explore the struggle many Aboriginal men face when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

There are a number of factors that contribute to health and wellbeing - diet, education, money management, community, access to food and relevant services and mental wellbeing. Over the period of 12 months we aim to follow 3 Aboriginal men (including the Director Adrian Wills) on their journey to close their own gap.

We are currently looking for 2 men of any age who are willing to be part of the series that will be filmed over a 12-month period. It is a big commitment but they will be supported throughout their journey and will not be alone in their quest.

At this stage they are asking for people to submit an outline about why they want to change their life - what is it about their life that they need to change so they don't wind up a statistic.

Men who are interested have a number of options on how to put themselves forward. They can film themselves and send us a disc/tape or upload to the email address supplied and it can be as short or long as they want. The other option is to drop an email to closingmygap@gmail.com outlining who they are, where they are from and why they want to be part of the series -what is it about their life that they need to change to improve their overall wellbeing.

The NDIS is about ensuring people get the individualised care and support they need over the course of their lifetime, so they can exercise more choice and control in their lives. It's a big job to transform the system we have now and we will need the input of people with disability, their carers and advocates from right around Australia to make sure you are at the centre of this reform.

Watch this great clip about The School of St Jude and read about Gemma Sisia, the only daughter of Sue and Basil Rice. They raised their eight children on a fine wool sheep station just out of Armidale on the New England Tablelands, about a six-hour drive north of Sydney, NSW, Australia.

I went to school with Gemma and she very kindly gave her advice when our own small school looked like closing.

I am in awe of her vision and what she has created.

St Jude's is definately on my bucket list of places to visit with my children in the future.

The Next Generation of Corporate Female Leaders

Women on Boards has launched its 2012 high level learning and development program for women aspiring to leadership roles.

The Next Generation of Female Corporate Leaders aims to increase the visibility of high potential women within their organisations and sectors.

Executive Director of Women on Boards Claire Braund, said the program seeks to provide participants with the confidence and capacity to successfully engage with senior leadership and boards.

The program is hosted by Commonwealth Bank of Australia which has set itself the goal of increasing the representation of women at Executive Manager level and above to 35 per cent by 2014 and already has three female directors on the board.

The program runs from March to September 2012 in Sydney, NSW, across three two-day sessions with some external project work.

To apply for the program women will need to be identified as, or with aspirations to be, a leader within their organisation or professional sector.

Women on Boards is offering two scholarship places to the program to women who are working at CEO, CFO or similar level for a Not for Profit / community organisation or industry association.

Tackling issues for ladies on the land

Women’s Business is a gathering for Rural Women focusing on connection to the land, networking, and finding balance in a hectic world.

“We aim to broach some of the big issues for women on the land in facilitated workshops; sharing knowledge and real-life stories of ordinary women achieving amazing things,” said Southern new England Land Care project officer Rebecca Smith.

It's done the email round but I think its worth posting at this time of year. Whatever your beliefs are its a fairly compelling and poignant piece......

Apparently the White House referred to Christmas Trees as Holiday Trees for the first time this year which prompted CBS presenter, Ben Stein, to present this piece which I would like to share with you. I think it applies just as much to many countries as it does to America .

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

My confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are, Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God ? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Hurricane Katrina).. Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?'

In light of recent events... Terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said okay.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit.

If not, then just discard it.... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

I was very interested to read that the lovely Mia Freedman along with Jennifer Hawkins and Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton of Sass and Bide fame are the new Range Rover Evoque "City Shaper" ambassadors.

They each received their new Range Rover Evoque last week at the Opera House and good luck to them I say.

Jealous much - hell yes.

But it did make me wonder why all the ambassadors for these items are always in the city. Surely country folk count for something. I do understand that the above vehicle is a city car so it would not suit my country roads anyway.

I really do need a 4WD - a real one.

I need a vehicle that can comfortably hold 4 children plus friends. One that will do many, many long trips - lets face it, that is most days. One that can drive through snow, rain, floods, bull dust, mud, grass, over rocks and through plagues of locusts. I need to be able to tow a horse float and a trailer. I need a vehicle that can handle tough dirt roads and roads covered in potholes. (atm I am waiting for one of my shocks on my current vehicle to be fixed from rough roads!) I need control and speed. And lets not mention the dirt, oh the dirt! I don't need dirt but I live with it and everything is covered with it. And yes I like luxury too. I wouldn't mind a "honking great sound system", lord knows I drive with music blaring - mostly to block out the children whining on long trips, which I have said is most days. TV screens for long trips - yes well lets face it most trips are long trips in the bush. 360 degree safety cameras would be great too but I do pride myself on my parking so I could actually give the parking system that parks for you a miss. I like to be independent. And useful. I like to think I can actually drive a car, (even though my husband would debate that).

Toyota pride themselves on having the earth's greatest 4WD. Really. Well let me have a go at it.

Plenty of room. Liking the idea of a cooler box as well, water is a necessity on a long trip.

Nissan - well lets see, I have always been a Toyota driver, but what can you do for me?

I like their safety features and storage ideas.

Mostly I just want something that is sturdy and safe, (doesn't have to be huge) - and I will need to occasionally wear a heel with it so it has to look good as well.

The R & M McGivern Prize is a prestigious art award that promotes artistic excellence in watercolour, oil and acrylic painting.

The award was established through the will of the late Muriel Evelyn McGivern who passed away on 29 January, 2000. The award is in memory of herself and her husband, the late Reginald McGivern.

The prize is awarded every three years from the date of Mrs McGivern's death. It was first awarded in 2003.

Each year a different theme is selected, the 2012 theme is Uncertainty.The winning artwork becomes an acquisition piece which remains the property of the City of Maroondah for the purpose of the exhibition.

The Women's Communal Living Project - 2012

An exciting new women's project will begin in January/February 2012 on a small eco-friendly farm in Exeter in the Southern Highlands of NSW.

Women aged 50 and over will come to stay at "Eden Farm" (4-5 at a time) throughout the year for periods ranging from a couple of weeks to a month or more, depending on availability.

As the year-long project progresses they hope, as women, to be able to demonstrate and discuss the feasibility of older women living a communal life together (e.g. house sharing with friends or others).

They want to come up with some creative ways of addressing a few of the challenges women face as we grow older - no matter whether we live in the city or the country - such as affordable housing and sometimes insufficient money to fund increasing longevity.

The Women's Communal Living Project is aimed at women over 50 who are, or may in future, live alone and who plan on living independently for as long as possible without necessarily relying on family or moving into a retirement village.

Share ideas and discussions about how friends or small groups of women on their own can take charge of their futures by living an active creative life together if they are widowed, divorced or on their own.

Costs are designed to be affordable for women on limited incomes.

Whatever our ages now, we will all need to address the issue of housing as we grow older and while creative communal housing options will not suit everyone the idea still has a lot going for it.

The potential benefits for the individual, the environment, community services and governments are innumerable but could include the following:

Provide companionship and better health outcomes by alleviating loneliness and depression amongst those living alone
Peace of mind for family members with less reliance on them Increase population density for the provision of community services
Reduce an individual's carbon footprint
Release more housing and rental properties to families and couples
Provide a creative alternative to current retirement housing options
Reduce the pressure on aged housing/care by delaying the time of entry into tiered aged care institutions
Create micro communities looking after each other - with shared resources
Provide quality of life benefits for the individual and social capital for the communities in which they live
Increase productivity and creativity - essential in healthy ageing.

The theme for the No.56 edition of The Country Web is 'Our Farmers. Out Future. It will join in the 2012 national celebration of Australian Year of the Farmer.

This very special year will put the spotlight on how important primary industries are to all of us no matter where we live. Farmers contribute to just about every aspect of our life - farming feeds, supports and sustains us with all sorts of produce.

We want to hear your stories about how women in particular have played a key role in shaping and building primary industries. Women have often been unrecognised and we are looking for stories of how they have excelled across our rural communities, displaying innovation, creativity, determination and resilience.

We're looking for:

Stories of women who have played a key role in shaping and building primary industries;
Stories of women farmers from a range of industries who are doing
something innovative or creative to remain viable;
Stories of young rural women who have chosen farming as their career and are contributing to life in small rural communities;
Poems about rural life;

Do you live in rural Australia? Do you like to paint? Would you like your artwork to appear on the cover of Australia’s health 2012?

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in partnership with the National Rural Health Alliance, is conducting an art competition to source cover art for AIHW’s publications. The theme for the artwork is the health and wellbeing of Australians.

Eligible entrants are people living in rural, regional and remote Australia. Four prizes of $1,000, $500, $300 and $200 are offered for winning artists. Entries close 5.00pm (EDST) Friday 6 January 2012.

Australian Year of the Farmer is looking for talented committed communicators to help raise awareness of the contribution agriculture makes to the lives of all Australians.

The National Roadshow

The National Roadshow is one of the critical components of the ‘Australian Year of the Farmer’. A team of eight (8) Toyota vehicles and one main ‘Royale unit’ will be leading the way for our fun, interactive, educational trailers laden with various forms of tactile, visual and audio style elements. The yearlong Roadshow will travel throughout the country to showcase our Agricultural Industry to rural, regional and urban Australia.

We are looking for resourceful, entrepreneurial, organised teams who have a passion for agriculture. We want to engage and enthuse members of the public about the Australian Year of the Farmer at a wide range of agricultural, sporting and cultural events, and we want you to help us bring ‘the Greatest Story Never Told’ to Australia.

How it will work

We are looking for either individuals and/or people in pairs.
Those from a certain state are encouraged to travel within that state unless otherwise highly knowledgeable about another state(s).
Employed on a roster based system; Roadshow co-ordinators will have a four to six week rotation “on the road” or otherwise based at head office in the nearest main city or possibly from your home office.
All “on-road” travelling expenses included with a generous remuneration package.
Employment opportunities on a full-time or on a casual basis

The Roadshow will involve

Managing a Roadshow vehicle and exhibition on an event circuit over a set period of rotation
Merchandise and showbag sales
Managing the “Mini-Archibull” children’s competition
Liaising with AYOF ambassadors and local champions for “meet and greets”
Engaging with the public about the educational display elements

Training end of December, first or second weekend in January (either/or)
Roadshow start: 19th January 2012
Roadshow end: 12th December 2012 (48 weeks)

Qualifications

Strong Agricultural background is highly regarded
Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading, and speaking
Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with high professionalism
Fantastic customer service ethic and high expectations for quality
Some experience in assisting with children’s activities is desirable
Proficient in general computer skills
Ability to travel is required
Must hold current full drivers licence

Beef 2012 will not only be about cattle - there will be plenty of opportunities for fun and entertainment as well and one of the main showpieces will be 'The Man from Snowy River' spectacular.

The show will be featuring locals and will need lots of horsemen and women as well as lots of other talented people.

Disasters Affect us in Many Ways

Damage to or destruction of homes, property and cherished belongings together with the obvious physical effects including loss of loved ones, pain or physical challenges are usually apparent. Initial short-term emotional effects such as fear, acute anxiety, grief, emotional numbness etc are very common.

However the emotional impact of a disaster often manifests some time later and can continue for many years to come.

The Australian & New Zealand Disaster and Emergency Management Conference in Brisbane from April 16 to April 18 next year will feature streams on the emotional impact of disasters (adults, children, volunteer workers etc) and also a workshop on ‘The warning signs of fractured communities’ and the call for papers is now open on the conference website – www.anzdmc.com.au

The conference committee are keen to create a comprehensive forum that will grow to become an annual event that will take place either in Australia or New Zealand in years to come and as such would like to see the conference offer professionals (and future professionals) including relevant health care professionals an opportunity to advance and improve approaches, thoughts and opinions and develop expertise, competencies and aptitudes relating to information and facts surrounding preparedness for future disasters, emergencies and hazards and the ability to recover from them quickly and efficiently.

The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition is very different to a typical beauty contest. Contestants are judged on their confidence, life goals, general knowledge, presentation and speech, and also on their knowledge of rural Australia and their local community. The Competition also encourages awareness of issues faced by women in rural NSW.

The 2012 Sydney Royal Easter Show will mark the 50th anniversary of this iconic event.

If you were a former winner, runner-up or finalist who reached the Sydney Royal State Finals, we’d love for you to be part of the anniversary celebrations planned to take place at the 2012 Show.
